It is downright gray in color with no shine whatsoever. Nothing works the silver is just really gray with no shine. I am Any suggestions? Hi Cherie, Thanks for the question. On the chain look for the mark on the clasp. It could be your piece is silver plated, and the plating has worn off, showing a less expensive and not shiny metal beneath.
Also, sometime things on eBay are not genuine. From Erin Brooke Jewelry: I recently got this email from Peggy, who had the opposite problem of tarnish. I wonder if you can help me. I have a beautiful sterling silver pendant which had the black in the crevices. Sorry, only way I know to explain it. I put it in silver polish and most of the black came off and now just looks ugly.
It looks like the easiest way to correct this is to have a jeweler apply a blackening or oxidizing chemical over the entire piece, then the top is polished with a polishing compound, and it shines up the high points, and leaves the blackening in the low recesses. I think this is what you mean? I truly appreciate it. It has however cleaned up very nicely with a tarnish removing cloth and wondered if that meant it was silver, since it had been able to oxidize?
It could be any number of base metals, coated in a microscopic layer of real silver. Gentle cleaning is best for silver plate; a soft cloth and light pressure. Hi Bob. Hi Erin. A week later she sent me a picture of the pendant and all of it had turned black even part of the chain that I had cleaned, I felt so awful I had only tried to shine it up for her.

Dear Sirs, We currently manufacture silver plated jewellery and we have experienced a blackening effect occurring on skin and apparel when the jewellery is worn. We use brass raw material as our base product then we plate with copper strike, a coating of palladium and then 5 microns silver followed by Palladium Cobalt Preservation PCP. Our question is what could be causing the blackening effect?
We have tested for tarnishing and there is no tarnishing occurring. Thank you for your help and assistance in this matter. Kind regards from Hong Kong! We are told it could be the result of an insufficiently thick protective components such as a combination of Miralloy, flash palladium and high quality plating to produce a porosity free-free plating. Your professional view and advice would be appreciated. Thank you very much,.
Hello John, As you probably already know, the palladium - cobalt flash coating is used as a diffusion barrier plate between the copper and silver. This flash coating may not be sufficient to hold back diffusion of the copper into the silver. When I hear skin turning black I think of copper migration. A pure silver plate alone will not turn skin black, unless the tank is full of metallic contaminants.
I would also suspect the PCP process, it doesn't seem to be holding up. There are a few steps you can take for corrective action measures. The other lot plated with a higher thickness coating of Pd-Co, say a 15 microinch thickness and follow the rest of your process for each lot.
