This story blends with that of Black Swan because it follows Nina, the innocent and sweet girl who struggles for the prize of perfection, however, the corruption of the Black Swan oppresses her, in which this leads to the death of Nina by the control of this inexorable dark force.
Nina Sayers. Nina Sayers is suitable for the White Swan role according to their similarity in characteristics. The White Swan is fragile and innocent, and also beautiful like Nina which is no challenge for her to perform. It this dark force that drives her insane when she tries to balance the opposing characters of good and evil.
The assimilation of two elements: darkness and light is impossible, according to Aronofsky who immerses us into this thriller of a ballet dancer forced to insanity by seeking perfection. Nina was corrupt rather than consummated as an artist by delving into a dark role, the wicked Black Swan in which she suffered from this dark transformation.
The dichotomy of black and white was shown in the setting and characters and the illusions that appeared to the protagonist, indicating the hallucinations from her insanity. Aronofsky uses this technique to contrast black and white to symbolize darkness of characters that opposed to Nina by aggression or seduction. The Black Swan was corrupting her slowly and she was tormented by illusions.
An insight of insanity, it was a metaphor by delving into her mind as the anger and aggression surfaced when the illusions depicted her evolution. Nina contended with the attempt to dance both roles of opposite ability, style, and personality in which forced her to insanity to see illusions of her double or Lily. Her insanity derived from the impossibility of darkness and light to coincide at her will to dance both roles. Illusion: Pulling a feather from her skin to depict evolution.
This technique was used for metaphor by the transcendence to dark passion she needed for the Black Swan. Mirrors were a recurring technique in the film to depict her evolution into the Black Swan by personification.
Characters were also used as devices for reflection. Nina is fascinated by the art of a statue. This gaze at the dark sculpture foreshadows what she will become.
